A former pop icon, whose golden era is long gone, tries to reunite his old band without realizing that the world has moved on. People’s attitudes, and even the industry, have changed.

Méndez’s character, Alan, isn’t helped by the fact that the other members of the band have changed significantly too. One former member is now in a wheelchair after being gored in a rather unmentionable part of his body by a bull’s horn; he has reinvented himself as a macho cowboy whose old-fashioned beliefs border on bigotry in 2024.

Another member is now an almost-naked sexual guru with an extremely attractive wife and questionable mystical powers; yet another member is a woman, which creates some dispute over the band’s name, “Technoboys.” Alan himself is willing to go to any lengths to return to the limelight, but he’s tormented by public opinion, trends, and criticism. He’s troubled by his public image, the reformation of a rival boy band at the same time, and his ex-girlfriend Melena, who has based her recent career on racial awareness and whom he desperately tries to win back.

Many of these foundational elements are lifted directly from other similar films. This is what makes it difficult to take “Technoboys” on its own terms; it doesn’t really have any of its own. It does have a trendy approach, poking fun at more contemporary topics like cancel culture and trans rights, but the fundamentals remain the same.

In this show, we will experience a lot of comedy along with music. The story attempts to showcase what music and passion for music truly are. It’s a fairly ordinary show, where we won’t see anything extraordinary.

The story is based on a band from 20 years ago called ‘Technoboys.’ This band was on its way to success, but one of the members, named Alan Melena, causes a scene while playing at a wedding, which leads to the band’s downfall. On the path to success, the band suddenly derails and completely flops.

Now, after 20 years, the band attempts to restart, and this time they face competition from another band called ‘Spicy Roots.’ However, their band seems outdated compared to the new one. Despite this, Alan and his team do not give up. What happens next? Will Alan be able to bring back his band’s popularity? You’ll have to watch the show to find out. The twists and turns in the film are quite predictable.

The music and cinematography are decent, and the production work is well done, but the show fails in the entertainment factor. What could have been the best show has ended up as just an average one.

Conclusion

At times, it’s quite funny, the performances are enthusiastic, and the songs range from okay to rather catchy. Beneath the film’s deliberately satirical approach to its social issues, there is a genuine attempt at understanding. The reinvention of “Technoboys” takes them from a box-ticking PR diversity exercise to a real appreciation of difference, and how to reshape an entity so that diversity is valued not for its novelty but for its own merit.

However, it could have been presented better. Making humor the main focus of a film like this makes sense, but sometimes it sacrifices a more coherent and meaningful storyline for easy laughs when it didn’t need to. With this cast, a better film could have been made with a few tweaks to the screenplay and more careful editing.

Whatever the case, though, the fast pace and energetic performances make “Technoboys” entertaining, even if not very memorable. The soundtrack could probably develop a life of its own if released separately from the film, but for now, it might not be worth sitting through almost two hours of mediocre satire just for the occasional catchy song. It depends on how you take it.
