Netflix Series Monsters:The Lyle and Erik Menendez Documentory
In the second installment of the Monster anthology series, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan bring to light another high-profile case that captivated the entire nation in the 1990s. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, coming to Netflix on September 19, tells the story of two brothers.
The Menendez case and trial were a media sensation in the early 1990s. Now, 35 years after the murders, Murphy’s new Netflix series will revisit the self-defense theory that was presented by the defense. During their 1993 trial, the Menendez brothers claimed that they shot and killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home on August 20, 1989.

They argued that they had been victims of years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father, and their mother knew about it. However, the prosecution argued that their motive was to take control of the family fortune.
After their conviction for premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder, both brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. After a decade of appeals was rejected by California courts, the Menendez brothers have been spending their adult lives in prison. Now, journalist and author Robert Rand hopes to bring forth new evidence that could overturn their sentences. In 2023, they filed documents seeking new habeas corpus petitions.

Monster Season 2 Trailer Review
The first teaser trailer for Netflix’s limited series depicted a “perfect” family with emerging cracks, setting a dark tone. It also hinted at the accusations made by Lyle and Erik, who claimed that their father, José, had sexually abused them for years.
The full trailer released on Wednesday dives deeper, showing José (played by Javier Bardem) being physically violent with his sons, and suggests even more violence.
The footage starts with the brothers (played by newcomers Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch) arriving at their home at night, both equipped with shotguns. They enter through the front door, and multiple shots are then fired.

In a therapy session, Chavez, portraying Lyle, remarks, “Erik and I killed our parents together, so I’d say that makes us pretty close.” The over two-minute preview then illustrates the brothers’ lives after the murder, as they confront nightmares, guilt, and elation in the time before their arrest. Lyle’s voiceover states, “Our life was one thing, and we decided we weren’t going to take that anymore. Starting right now, we’re gonna demand more out of life. And we are never gonna fucking go back.”
The footage then shows their arrests and trial. Nathan Lane, playing investigative journalist Dominick Dunne, comments, “You don’t murder your parents that way. Literally defacing them. That’s not about money. That’s about something else deeper and darker.”
