December 24, 1999 Indian Airlines flight IC 814 took off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu for New Delhi. There were a total of 15 crew members including 176 passengers in this aircraft. Some hijackers had boarded the plane posing as passengers. As the plane entered Indian airspace, the hijackers took over the entire plane, pointed guns at the crew and passengers, assaulted them and diverted the plane from Delhi to Pakistan.

This incident was discussed worldwide, because apart from Indians, some foreign passengers were also on board the flight. The hijacked plane stopped for a while in Amritsar and then took off for Lahore. The plane landed in Lahore without taking permission from the Government of Pakistan. The next morning the plane landed directly from Lahore in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Apart from this, 27 more passengers, most of whom were women and children, were released in exchange for refueling. A few hours after the plane was hijacked, the hijackers started making their demands. These included the demand for the release of terrorists lodged in Indian jails.

Due to pressure on the government, in the end, for the safety of the passengers, a decision had to be taken to release three terrorists from Indian jails by taking them to Kandahar. These three terrorists were Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar.
